I love the idea of seeing where the stars are in relation to your home, it brings to mind the ancient monuments aligned with the skies. Like I have one very small west facing window where certain bright stars appear briefly. I was under the impression that only the temples and sacred spaces in ancient buildings were aligned to the sky, not the houses of the common people? Unless they were? The closest I can think of is how many properties will say whether they are south facing to catch the most sunlight.

I was also thinking about how your house is in relation to things like the wind. And even if you have a local or hyperlocal microclimate...my garden has walls to the north and east so doesn't get the coldest winds, but is open to the south so it gets all the sun. It gets much warmer in the garden as a result...

I thought of you when I spoke about the stars. You are right, as far as I'm aware archeologically it's mostly sacred spaces aligned with the sky...and yet, I wonder if there were common dwelling spaces that were also more considered in terms of their location, it's just their remains aren't easy to find? I love your thought about the wind too. There are certain rooms in my home where you can hear and feel the wind battering the walls in storms much more so than others.

I recall-I might be wrong here-that early houses were built with their opening facing east so the light of the rising sun would wake up the inhabitants...

I love the way you relate the nesting of the birds to the human world. Since moving into my own home, I’ve really felt such a difference…I feel safe, I feel like I belong and I feel grounded. So interesting to think about how our houses are made! Thank you.

Oh that's so interesting. Is that because you can make it fully your own rather than having to cater to others' needs? Or because you can do more as the house is yours rather than a landlords?

It’s being able to make it fully my own mostly, but also it feels more stable because I am not at the mercy of a landlord who might decide to sell or put the rent up at any time. I saw a meme recently that was something along the lines of ‘we are the only species on earth that has to earn money in order to live and eat’ and I felt that deeply 🤦‍♀️

Oh yes - it's absolute madness when you step back and look at it. That we have to earn the right to basic needs such as food and shelter and land. Glad you have a space for you now.
